The Gothic Quarter – Barcelona

If you feel like a leisurely walk through the old parts of the city, the Gothic Quarter may be just the right thing for you.  The quarter encompasses the oldest parts of the city of Barcelona, as well as parts of the old Roman wall and medieval sites to see. It also includes what used to be the medieval Jewish Quarter.

If you are into Roman ruins, you will be able to find a few scattered through out the area, such as the Roman wall, the remains of a Roman Temple, and an occasional peek at some old Roman plumbing that used to run through the city.

Barcelona traces its origins over 2,000 years ago to the Roman colony called Barcino. It was founded by Emperor Augustus during the period of 15-10 BC, and the full Latin name of the colony was Iulia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino, how’s that for a mouth full?

So much to see in Barcelona, certainly any trip to Spain should include a few days in the city to enjoy it’s architecture, art, natural beauty and history.
